New Braunfels was established in 1845 by the German Prince, Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Commissioner General of the “Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas”. Prince Carl named the city after his hometown of Braunfels in Germany. By 1850, New Braunfels was the fourth largest city in Texas. Today New Braunfels attracts millions of people from all over the world, either to visit or to call home.

The town holds a German-style festival called Wurstfest (“sausage festival”) every November to celebrate the city’s German heritage. New Braunfels draws in around 3 million tourists each year, particularly because of the cold-spring rivers that run through the city. Tubing down the rivers that run through the city during the hot summer months is a huge attraction. Schlitterbahn Water Park, which was voted as the #1 waterpark in the world for 23 years, is located in New Braunfels.

New Braunfels has grown around 56% over the last decade, adding about 32,500 new residents. The population of New Braunfels in 2020 was 84,622.
